Not Without My Daughter-Book Review

Book: Not Without My Daughter

Author: Betty Mahmoody

Rating: 5/5

Genre:Non Fiction

Plot:

In August 1984, Michigan housewife Betty Mahmoody accompanied her husband to his native Iran for a two-week vacation that turned into a permanent stay. To her horror, she found herself and her four-year-old daughter, Mahtob, virtual prisoners of a man rededicated to his Shiite Moslem faith, in a land where women are near-slaves and Americans despised. Their only hope for escape lay in a dangerous underground that would not take her child.

While the story was true, Betty changed certain aspects of the story in order to protect those who aided her and her daughter in their escape. She wrote the following:

This is a true story.
The characters are authentic, the events real. But the names and identifying details of certain individuals have been disguised in order to protect them and their families against the possibility of arrest and execution by the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. These are: Hamid, the owner of a menswear store; Judy, an American woman married to an Iranian; Judy's brother-in-law, Ali; Judy's friends, Rasheed, Trish, and Suzanne; the schoolteacher Mrs. Azahr; the mysterious Miss Alavi; Amahl; and the smuggler, Mosehn

Thoughts:

This was an intense read.
I have read reviews where people mention that the author portrays whole of Iran as bad or negative, I would disagree.Author gives credit where it is due and mentions of people who helped her.And is entitled to her opinion given what she has gone through.
Imagining walking in authors shoes is definitely very scary!
The way women are treated/ were treated in the 1980’s in Iran is explained by the author and it definitely gives you chills!
It was a raw and engaging read.A prefect end for my 2020 reading journey.
